East Village is the largest district in downtown San Diego . It is bounded by the Gaslamp Quarter on the west, the Core district and Cortez Hill on the northwest. It was essentially the first neighborhood of San Diego providing goods and services to the City from the numerous warehouses. These warehouses are now being converted into charming lofts, galleries and boutiques. The neighborhood is characterized by artists’ homes, eclectic studios and quaint shops. East Village shares the same seedy past with the Gaslamp Quarter as the neighborhood started to deteriorated in the 1950s. Crime, drug use, and homeless were rampant in the area which was also home to peep shows, massage parlors and adult-books stores. Due to an extensive development plan, this sprawling district has been transformed. Construction of the breathtaking Park Boulevard is currently underway which will eventually link San Diego Bay with Balboa Park. Park at the Park is also in the works which will be a picnic area during game days and a neighborhood park during all other times. The city has chosen East Village as the site for the new main library. The New School of Architecture and the San Diego City College are also located here. All this makes the East Village an exciting place for new families.
If you want to be mere footsteps away from parks, shopping, schools, museums, galleries, and a unique way of life, the East Village is the place to be.
